Spot the Signs: Continuing the Conversation on Mental Health in Construction

At Rockthorn, we’ve seen first-hand how vital mental health awareness is within the construction industry. Long hours, tough working conditions, and the pressure to ‘stay strong’ or to ‘be tough’ often mean that the signs that someone is struggling go unnoticed. The result is devastating, suicide is still the leading cause of death for not just construction workers under 50, but all men in the UK.

In 2023, we partnered with Mind to launch the Spot the Signs campaign, an initiative designed to shine a light on mental health in the place it is often overlooked the most, on site.

Reflecting on The Campaign

You may remember, the campaign used construction-style safety signage to highlight the early warning signs of poor mental health. These signs acted as daily reminders to check in on ourselves and each other.

We also shared weekly interviews with people across the industry, from site operatives to managing directors, who spoke openly about their own experiences. These conversations helped break down stigma and showed that mental health doesn’t discriminate by job title or seniority.

The response was incredible. We saw the power of openness, the impact of visibility and the willingness across our industry to start talking about what has too often been ignored.

Looking Ahead

This year, we want to continue the momentum. Mental health is not a one-time conversation, it’s an ongoing commitment. That’s why we are resharing the Spot the Signs campaign this year, to continue to raise awareness across construction.

Our goal is simple, to help shift the culture of our industry so that health and safety includes both body and mind.

How You Can Help

  • Take a moment to familiarise yourself with the signs of poor mental health.
  • Start a conversation if you notice someone struggling, it doesn’t have to be complicated, just be curious.
  • Share resources, stories and campaigns like this one, to help others know they’re not alone.

At Rockthorn, we believe the strongest foundations aren’t just built on concrete and steel, they’re built on people. By continuing to raise awareness, together we can create a safer, healthier future for everyone in construction.
